3 Tips for Staying Healthy this 4th of July

Fireworks! Barbecues! Jello shots! Whether you’re planning a cookout with family and friends or hanging out by the pool this Fourth of July, we all know it typically ends in too much greasy food and too many drinks. Celebrating the holiday should be fun, but in moderation. Don’t compromise your health — or risk feeling terrible the next day! Here are some simple and painless strategies to keep your 4th healthy, while still having a good time. 🇺🇸

1. Fuel up before you go.

We’re big advocates for eating breakfast every morning to help fuel your body for the day ahead. A healthy breakfast is especially important for days when you know you’ll be spending long periods out and about, in the sun and staying active. Try to eat something packed with fiber + protein to keep you full and give your body the energy it needs for the day ahead.

Some good choices include avocado toast (with eggs or greek yogurt on the side), a bowl of oatmeal topped with fresh fruit, chia seeds + nut butter, or a smoothie packed with fruits, veggies and healthy supplements. (And of course, a cup of Healthy Bean! 😉)

2. Stay Hydrated

It can be easy to forget a glass of water between each alcoholic drink, but it’s super important and your body will feel the difference. Without enough water, your body can’t function properly, and no one wants that on a big day partying with friends and family. Alcohol also has dehydrating effects on the body, so being out in the sun while drinking is a double-whammy.

Try to drink one 8oz glass of water between each alcoholic drink you consume to stay hydrated. Pro tip: bring a reusable water bottle with you and keep it by your side so you’re reminded to refill and rehydrate. Add fruits like lemons, limes or strawberries for a flavorful touch.

3. Master your Meal by Planning Ahead

Every cookout has some of the following things: burgers, hot dogs, greasy sides, sugary desserts…you get the point. You should still treat yourself to whatever you like but think ahead if you know these foods won’t fulfill your body. Greasy foods can wear you down and make you tired, so if you need energy for the day ahead perhaps switch out the fries for a healthy alternative.

Talk to your friends + family about the 4th of July menu ahead of time so you can plan to bring or prepare some healthy sides. For example, provide a healthy 4th of July fruit salad with watermelon, strawberries and blueberries, or plan to take some healthy snacks like hummus, cheese wedges and fruit in your bag before leaving the house. They’ll fuel you up + make you feel good for the day ahead!
